The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother of God, has a significant place in Catholic Tradition, namely in Sacred Art.
My home parish, the San Gabriel Mission has a famous image of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the story goes like this:
Legend claims that the native chiefs tried to prevent the fathers from building. Afraid of a bloody battle, they showed the chiefs a painting of Our Lady of Sorrows and the chiefs immediately threw down their bows and arrows.
May sees a special devotion to Mary spring in the Church, for Mary herself is the Queen of May. As the Earth springs with new beautiful life, and flowers decorate creation in glory, we remember Mary who is a glorious crown on humanity.
And the power of beauty is greater then any aggression. The power of the beauty of the Queen of angels and saints is magnificent beyond compare.
